Choosing a Forklift for a Precast Concrete Yard in Western Australia
Western Australia’s building and infrastructure pipeline leans heavily on precast concrete: wall panels for warehouses in the eastern suburbs, culverts and barriers for road projects, and structural elements for mining and resources work up north. Every one of those pieces passes over the forks of a forklift in a precast yard.
Choosing that forklift on headline tonnage alone is a common and expensive mistake. A single precast yard can handle light half-slabs in the morning and heavy box culverts in the afternoon, and each load behaves differently on the forks.
At a glance
- Rated capacity only applies at the stated load centre. Long precast elements reduce it.
- Taller masts lower capacity, so only buy the lift height you need.
- Sideshift, fork positioners and wide carriages save time and reduce damage.
- Many yards need a mix: electric or LPG indoors, diesel outside.
Rated capacity and load centre
A forklift’s rated capacity is measured at a set load centre. For example, the Hyundai 160D-9 is rated at 16 tonnes at a 600 mm load centre. Precast elements are often long, and their centre of gravity can sit well forward of that point. When it does, the safe lifting capacity drops. Always check the load chart against the real distance from the fork face to the centre of gravity of your heaviest pieces.
Mast height changes capacity too
The same forklift can have different capacities depending on its mast. On the 160D-9, the two-stage V300 mast keeps the full 16-tonne rating, while a three-stage TS750 mast brings it down to around 14 tonnes at the same load centre. Fork extensions and special attachments reduce it further. If your yard only stacks two high, you don’t need the tallest mast.
Built for heavy, dusty work
For mid-to-heavy precast handling, the 160D-9 combines a Cummins QSB6.7 engine (164 hp), a ZF automatic transmission and a Kessler reduction drive axle. Wet disc brakes are sealed away from dust, which matters in a concrete yard. Gradeability under load is 37.7 per cent.
Carriages, counterweights and attachments
- Extra counterweight helps balance the forward load of long elements.
- Wide carriages spread the load across broad panels and double-T sections.
- Integrated sideshift lets the operator line up a load without moving the whole truck, saving time and reducing knocks.
- Hydraulic fork positioners (82 mm or 100 mm bore options) adjust fork spacing for different element widths.
- Clamp attachments suit elements that must travel upright.
These are best specified at the time of order rather than retrofitted later.
Tyres for your yard surface
Pneumatic tyres (for example 12.00-20-18PR) absorb shock on rough ground and suit yards where elements are carried long distances. Solid tyres are a better choice where concrete offcuts, tie wire and other debris are hard to control, because they can’t be punctured.
Matching power source to each area
| Area of the yard | Typical forklift |
|---|---|
| Indoor moulding, demoulding and finishing | Electric or LPG counterbalance |
| Small component storage and truck loading | Mid-range heavy-duty diesel |
| Large component storage and loading | 16-tonne class diesel |
| Extra-heavy segments | Larger heavy-duty diesel |
Sites running three shifts that want to move indoor work to electric should plan battery charging, either opportunity charging during breaks or battery changeovers.
Safety in a precast yard
Tip-overs and dropped loads are the main risks. Off-centre long loads, sharp turns and changes in slope all contribute. A good traffic management plan slows turning speeds under load and keeps forklifts and pedestrians apart. Big forklifts also have big blind spots: the 160D-9 can be fitted with a four-channel rear-view camera system and operator presence sensing, and a load weight indicator helps stop overloading before it happens.
What this means for Perth and WA sites
Many WA precast yards are on unsealed or partly sealed ground, deal with fine dust for much of the year, and load trucks for long regional and mine-site deliveries. That points towards sealed brakes, the right tyre choice and enough capacity margin for awkward loads. Before you ask for a quote, have these six details ready:
- The weight and dimensions of your largest elements
- The distance from each element’s centre of gravity to the fork face
- Maximum lift height and any overhead limits
- Yard surface (sealed, gravel or unsealed) and the steepest slope
- How much work is indoors versus outdoors
- Operating hours, shifts and whether you prefer to buy, lease or hire

Frequently asked questions
Why can't my 16-tonne forklift lift a 16-tonne panel?
Because the 16-tonne rating applies at a 600 mm load centre. If the panel’s centre of gravity sits further out, the safe capacity is lower. Check the load chart.
Pneumatic or solid tyres for a precast yard?
Pneumatic tyres give a smoother ride on rough ground. Solid tyres are better where debris could cause punctures.
Can I use electric forklifts in a precast yard?
Yes, for indoor moulding and finishing areas. Heavy outdoor handling is usually still done with diesel.
